I think this would be a great creative outlet for kids to work on after the big tests, 

on Fun Fridays or Motivate Me Mondays.

This is a super cute idea by Jonathan Fog on Ehow: Family Tree.

Students can create one and then present to the class, describing each family member - looks, Personality, Likes, Dislikes, Famous quotations, etc.) Another creative way to use this tree would be organize collaborative groups.

February Pinterest Picks

Happy February, everyone.  

This year is already in full swing!

What better way to celebrate than to join this month's Pick 3 Linky Party.

Here are my top 3 picks:

Pom Pom Book Marks

I think these pom pom book marks are easy to make and they would make lovely, inexpensive student gifts for either the first day of school or the first day the student comes to your class.  In August I purchase tons of composition books.  I give each student a free composition on the first day of school or the first day they come to our class.  Placing a pom pom book mark would add a little lovely detail.  I think this might go on my summer to do list, for sure. 

Mini DIY Button Book

This has to be the cutest DIY tiny book ever.  It seems very elementary, but I have to adapt it to middle school somehow.  I started in elementary and I use many elementary methods with my kids.  And, I have to say, they love it.  Who doesn't love creating and color?  I think I could use these mini books to help kids review parts of speech, types of sentences, literary terms, narrative elements, acrostics, etc.  Nice fun projects for E.O.Y. activities.

Book Crate On Wheels

I love crates.  This book shelf crates would be great to place near classroom reading nooks.

Composition Book Built-In Pencil Holder

I love this idea, a pencil holder on the spine of the student composition books.  I don't think it even has to be that fancy.  All I need is ribbon and packing tape.  I'm going to try this for sure, especially for students who seem to lose their pencils regularly.

Happy November, Everyone!

I'm a little late posting my November Pinterest Picks.  I caught my annual teacher cold and was out of commission there for a while.  I've got to find a way to avoid these colds.  I wash my hands, I don't use the kids' pencils, I take vitamin C, and somehow it doesn't seem to be enough.  

Well, enough of me, let's focus on November's Pinterest Picks.

Pick 3 ~ This Month's Top Pinterest Picks Linky Party

Theme: Items to Use in the Classroom During the Month of September.

Middle schools usually don't hold a Meet the Teacher event before school begins.  However, we do have an Open House.  For us it usually falls the first or second week of September.

One fabulous Pinterest find was from 

Teaching Teens In the Twenty First Century,

a parent questionnaire.

Not only does this give parents and guardians something to do while waiting for the room to fill,
but the information will be very useful.

A Letter to the Student from the Parent by Second Grade Style

Although this picture obviously is geared towards second grade, I think it would work just as well with middle schoolers.  This second grade teacher asks her parents to write a letter to their child during Open House and she has them sitting on their desks when they arrive in the morning.  I have mailboxes for my students.  I'd probably put the letters in their mailboxes with a little gift.  Along with the sign-sheet, this will help me know immediately who came and who didn't.

Another useful and great idea.  Sharing a little of yourself is a great way to connect with families right at the beginning.  Love this idea.
